Members of the House of Keys have reacted angrily to news that the next Chief Secretary will be paid up to £137,977.

The Chairman of the Civil Service Commission John Houghton told MHKs that there hadn't been time to review the pay scale before the start of the recruitment process for Mary Williams' replacement.

Mrs Williams, who currently holds the top civil service role on the Island, is set to retire at the end of December.

Interviews for her successor are being held over the next week

Onchan MHK Peter Karran thinks it's out of order to expect civil servants to take a pay freeze, when such large salaries are being handed out [play clip]
