Positive results by placing 17 year olds in Secure Unit

Jurby prison was judged to be unsuitable for housing 17 year olds

Placing 17 year olds in the Children's Secure Unit whilst on remand or serving a custodial sentence is helping to reduce re-offending.

 

The Departments of Social Care and Home Affairs say the change, which came in in January is providing more positive outcomes for young offenders.

 

Previously, 17 year olds were placed in the prison.

 

However, it was deemed unsuitable to place young offenders in an adult environment.

 

The Secure Unit is operated by St Christopher's
