Party says election spending rules needed urgently

Sat, 14 May 2011

The Liberal Vannin Party says it's disappointed that a bill that would see spending during elections on the Island capped wasn't taken further in the House of Keys this week.

Chief Minister Tony Brown had hoped to suspend standing orders to take the Representation of the People Bill to the next stage, getting it passed in to law more quickly.

Liberal Vannin MHK Peter Karran believes the legislation is needed urgently, with the General Election just four months away.

However 10 MHKs voted against taking the Bill further.

The Bill would also see all donations to an election campaign over £50 having to be declared, an a ban on anonymous backers.
