Flat fire cause under investigation

Wed, 14 Sep 2011

The cause of a fire at a block of flats in Douglas is under investigation.

Fire crews were called to the blaze in Lord Street at around 11 o'clock last night.

Flames and smoke were billowing from an apartment on the first floor when firefighters arrived.

Initially they'd had reports that there'd been explosions and that a number of flats were affected, but this turned out not to be the case.

Three people inside the building were led to safety and treated for smoke inhalation.

A fireman was also checked over by doctors but was later discharged.

Residents from the surrounding flats were evacuated and were cared for at the Sea Terminal by Red Cross volunteers, although they were allowed back home by 12.30.

The cause of the fire isn't known yet.

John Murtagh was one of the firefighters who was called to the scene.[play media file below]
