Ben turns back to Douglas with engine problems

The Ben my Chree is returning to Douglas after developing engine problems on her way to Birkenhead this morning.

The Steam Packet Company says it was decided on safety grounds not to attempt docking at Birkenhead with only one engine in operation.

The vessel is now slowly returning to the Island, and is expected to dock at around 3.30pm.

Tonight was a scheduled maintenance break for the Ben, so this time will be used to assess the problem.

It's hoped the vessel will be able to return to service tomorrow morning.

There are 240 passengers on board and 150 were booked to travel this afternoon from Birkenhead to Douglas.

The Steam Packet says it's arranging transfers and overnight accommodation where necessary for those affected.
