The police officer accused of causing the death of a Manx student by careless driving has been giving evidence in his trial.

19 year old Jamie Haslett was killed when he was hit by a police car in Sheffield in October 2010.

PC Rodney Mills was returning to his police station before responding to a non-emergency call out.

Mr Haslett who was from Onchan was on a night out with friends and had been returning to his accommodation when the accident happened.

Bradford Crown Court has heard Mills was travelling at 60 mph, which was nearly twice the speed limit.

He wasn't using sirens or flashing blue lights.

The 42 year old said he 'didn't expect' Mr Haslett to run out in front of him.

He denies the charge against him.
