'Every effort being made' to reopen Southlands as soon as possible

It’s been a week since it was announced that eight elderly residents would be forced to move care homes because of staff shortages.

Just four days later, on Tuesday, the eight, who are residents on the EMI Gansey Unit at Southlands, made the move to Thie Meanagh in Douglas.

The move has created friction between the relatives of the residents and the Department of Social Care which claims it did not have enough staff to meet acceptable levels.

It’s now a waiting game to see how long it will take to find more staff for the unit – although relatives have been told it will be at least a month.

Assistant director of adult social care, Cath Hayhow, says every effort is being made to reopen the unit as quickly as possible:
