Current civil servants not to blame for problems faced by government, says MHK

Amidst a huge money saving operation across government a 20 pence per hour pay rise for all civil servants and Tynwald members was announced yesterday.

The increase will be the same across the board, working out at roughly 1.08% on the average civil servant salary.

Some Tynwald members have turned down the extra money; with the hike taking their basic salary to just shy of £38,000.

Alf Cannan is the Chairman of both the Civil Service Commission and the Whitley Council; he said it’s unfair to say the existing civil service are undeserving of the wage bump.

He told us he feels the majority of the issues government are faced with have been decades in the making:
