New proposals mean students are responsible for debt

Thu, 03 Jan 2013

Students who take out loans to go to university will be solely responsible for the debt they incur.

That’s according to the Department of Education and Children which has revised original plans to make parents jointly liable.

Under new proposals going to Tynwald this month, students will have to contribute at least £2,500 per year towards their tuition fees.

They'd be assisted in doing this through a government loan scheme.

The department says it’s changed the rules after concerns that some lower earning families would have felt unable to take on the responsibility of a loan.
