Summerland memorial service taking place tonight

Fri, 02 Aug 2013

A special service is being held today to mark the 40th anniversary of the Summerland fire disaster.

Douglas Council has organised the event, and dedication of a memorial, to mark the loss of 50 lives in the disaster in 1973.

It will take place in the Kaye Memorial Garden on Queen’s Promenade at 7.45pm.

The memorial will be installed at the foot of Summer Hill and will take the form of three granite columns which will bear the names of those who died when the seven-storey leisure complex was destroyed by fire.

A memorial stone is already there which was laid in 1998 to mark the 25th anniversary.
