Police vow to safeguard children

Tue, 24 Sep 2013

Police say they will work closely with their partners to continue to protect and safeguard children on the Isle of Man.

It follows what they've described as an 'extremely difficult investigation' which yesterday saw a former nursery worker jailed for indecently assaulting a three-year-old child.

24-year-old Douglas man Andrew Maddrell received a five year sentence for the offence which happened while the child was in his care at the Sandcastles Kindergarten.

He had also pleaded guilty to a separate offence of possessing 232 indecent images of children.

Police say Mr Maddrell was in a position of 'ultimate trust' and for reasons only known to him chose to breach this and assault a child for his own 'selfish sexual gratification'.

They say they hope the sentence will be some form of closure for the children and families involved.
