Island's fire and rescue service to modernise

Mon, 13 Jan 2014

The Isle of Man's Fire and Rescue Service is set to be modernised.

The Department of Home Affairs wants to introduce the Fire and Rescue Service Bill 2013 - which would replace current legislation that dates back to 1984.

It wants to extend the core functions of the service so that people recognise firefighters also deal with road traffic incidents, flooding and community safety.

Another idea being looked at is to charge people for call outs which are a result of malice or recklessness.

Members of the public are being asked to have their say - a consultation is running on the government website.
