League results for the week ending 7th February 2014.

Mixed League 2

Duncan Lawrie Selborne A  16 Sulby Glen Sulby 0

Mixed League 3

Celton Fencibles B 6  Tynwald Celts A 12

Both teams were fielding reserves in a cold Trinity Hall and Fencibles had more woe when Becky Hands hurt her back and the home team had to concede four games. Second men’s and second women’s all went Fencibles way with a good win for Caiomhe O'Mahoney making a winning debut. First men's went to Tynwald Celts. Fourth mixed produced the battle of the reserves with Tom Callow and Isabel Barrie of Tynwald Celts getting the better of Paul Flanders and O’Mahoney in three games 17/21 21/18 21/18. Third mixed also went to three with Dave Wilson and Charmian McMorris of Tynwald Celts beating Mark Quayle and Megan Sands 21/17 13/21 21/15. Second mixed went to the away side with the final score being 12-6 to Tynwald Celts. Best wishes to Becky Hands for a speedy recovery. RC

Duncan Lawrie Selborne B 10  CuPlas St Ninians B 7

This good win for Selborne appears to have secured the league title for Vikings.  Selborne's Paul Griffiths and Ben Watterson started the ball rolling with a confident 21/14 21/12 win over Andrew Foley and Simon Craig. Second womens was long and hard fought before being eventually taken by Gill Young and Felicia Gawne 24/22 24/26 21/15 against the younger St Ninians' pair Alex Domingo and Lucy Carter. Alan Ferguson and Roy Wilson of Selborne were well beaten by quality play from Avinash Chandarana and Jonny Tickner 21/10 21/13. Selborne's Julie McLean and Anita Griffiths stepped up to sneak first womens 21/19 22/20 versus Allison Harrison and Pat Crease. Selborne took fourth mixed comfortably with some consistent play especially from Young. Watterson and Gawne at third mixed won 21/12 21/19 against St Ninians’ Foley and Carter. St Ninians won both top mixed with Tickner and Harrison and then Chandarana and Crease, both a bit too good on the night.  RM

Mixed League 4

Microgaming Marown C 7  Magee & Co Castletown /Abbey B 13

Castletown Abbey B surely wrapped up the league 4 title with a 13-7 win away at Marown C.  In what is a very tight league for the rest however, all four of the other teams could finish second or be relegated!! The match included four which went to three games but really hinged on the mixed matches with the away team winning three out of four. The closest was at first mixed where Adam Pyatt-Coppell and Jess Lloyd of Marown beat Colin Kelly and Pim Charoenchai 21/14 17/21 22/20. PC

Mixed League 5

Citywing Vikings C 13  Tynwald Celts B 6

Ayre Mowers Sulby 16  RL360 Rushen C 2

This was a welcome win and sixteen games for Ayre Mowers against Rushen.  Although the overall score doesn’t show it, we had a very competitive evening with good sportsmanship shown on both sides. There were some well fought matches but the closest of the night being first womens with the long standing pairing of Judy Kelly and Louise Strickett winning in the end 18/21 21/19 21/17 against Lucie Davey and Caroline Whitehead.  Second mixed also went to three with Sulby’s Stuart Clarke and Judy Kelly winning 17/21 21/8 21/14 against Dave Leigh and Davey. Congratulations go to Aiden McMahon who played up for Sulby partnering with Bob Mylchreest who won their match. PLS

Mixed League 6

PWC Castletown/Abbey C 10 Nationwide Michael B 11

Caley Stores Sulby 0  Kella Farms Sulby 16

This was a critical match for Kella Farms Sulby who needed to maximise their points to keep them in the hunt for the League 6 title – and they did it in style despite playing two reserves. But it was far from a one sided affair with Caley Stores Sulby team playing very competitively and with a bit more luck could have taken a few games. Chris Shillam was playing his first ever league match with Billy Dickinson in the men’s and Joan Hughes in the mixed and should be pleased with his performance against very experienced opposition. This moved Kella Farms Sulby to the top of this League but only by a margin of one single point above Nationwide Michael. This league title will therefore now be decided during the very last match of the season in a Sulby v Michael derby game. It was 10/10 at Michael earlier in season and so this title race will go right to the wire on the 13th March when Sulby are the hosts. IC
