Green approach keeps prison costs down

A green approach at the prison has led to some much needed savings.

Schemes focused on recycling, waste management and energy efficiency have helped cut running costs and strengthen community ties.

Two offenders have had active involvement in a recycling project that's lowered utility bills while food costs are kept down, thanks to the production of nearly two tonnes of vegetables in the prison polytunnels.

MLC Mike Coleman has responsibility for the Prison and Probation Service - he says the committee behind the project had two main objectives in mind when devising new schemes:
