Details released on 300 people rescued by Manx registered ship

Fri, 13 Jun 2014

More details have been released about 300 people rescued at sea by a Manx registered ship.

'Jupiter Bay' was en-route from Tunis to Gibraltar late last Friday night when it took a call from the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Rome - requesting assistance in a search and rescue effort.

Within an hour, the 30,153 deadweight tonnage bulk carrier came to the rescue of some 322 men, women, children and infants trying to cross the Mediterranean in two wooden boats.

Seas between North Africa and Italy are popular with migrants seeking new lives in Europe.

The ship disembarked at Pozzallo in Sicily.
