Winner of the Veterans Trophy on Monday evening Richard Arthur, competing in the Osborn Carpets Scratch match during the summer, at the Sinclair 50 metre range.

The first two of the Isle of Man Rifle Associations 2014/15 seasons indoor 15 yard competitions were held at the Sinclair Range on Wednesday evening and the winner of the first event, The Veterans Trophy for shooters aged 50 and above, went to Richard Arthur. There was a reasonable turnout of members for this match which required a preliminary shoot-off to reduce the field to eight. First out of the hat was John Brewis against Suzanne McKnight with Ashley Gardner against Norman Ormrod as the second pairing. A re-gauge was required in the Brewis v McKnight match after each posted 98’s – the re-gauge went in McKnight’s favour when her score remained on 98 and Brewis’s dropped to 97. In the other prelim, Ashley Gardner posted 93 with Norman Ormrod only hitting a 91. This then left a quarter final of eight shooters and the results were – Suzanne McKnight 92 v Tom Lord 95, Ashley Gardner 99 v Bill Jones 98, Liz Jones 93 v Richard Arthur 97 and Nick Brown 96 v Judy Kee 95. In the semi-final, a re-gauge was once again required in the Gardner v Lord match when both posted 98’s with the win going in Gardner’s favour and Richard Arthur scoring 99 to Nick Brown’s 96. The final was a clear win for Arthur when he managed to post 98 to Gardner’s 96. An excellent match enjoyed by all present.

John Brewis claims the second of the evening’s competitions

Excellent scores gave John Brewis a win in the second competition on Wednesday evening, The Oake Trophy, a match for those older shooters aged 65 and over. This competition is a scratch match of two cards shot shoulder to shoulder. Just six shooters took part and the results show that some unusual and inconsistent scores were posted however Brewis maintained his composure throughout  posting  excellent scores of two 98’s and claimed a deserved win. Results were :- 1 – Brewis 98, 98 = 196, 2 – Nick Brown 97, 95 = 192, 3 – Liz Jones 96 (re-gauged to 95), 94 (re-gauged to 93) = 190 (188), 4 – Tom Lord 97 (re-gauged to 96), 93 (re-gauged to 91) = 190 (187), 5 – Judy Kee 95, 92 = 187, 6 – Bill Jones 99, 86 = 185. A very disappointed Bill Jones scored just 86 on his second card after a terrific 99 on his first – it just goes to show it can happen to any of us Bill.
