IoM Archery Report Penrith and Onchan

Thu, 20 Nov 2014

Five members of the IoM Archery Club travelled to Penrith at the weekend to take part in the Northern Counties Championship. The small group had a terrific time with all but one taking a place on the podium for their respective discipline. The Championships were shot on a Portsmouth face and divided by bow type, gender and age group.

Pete Mumford put in a score of 60/567/27 to take third place in the Gents Compound division. Billy Lightfoot was somewhat out of practice and suffered a miss with his second arrow of the contest which effectively put paid to his chances. His score of 59/553/22 was still pretty good though.

Joy Gough, shooting in the Ladies Compound division, secured third place with her score of 60/565/25.

Karen Lott, who has been enjoying a wonderful Indoor Season, took full advantage of the excellent lighting at Penrith to put in a score of 60/557/24. This was enough to make her the Northern Counties Ladies Recurve Champion and bring home a beautiful trophy to add to her collection.

The star of the show however was Josh Trafford. Shooting in the under16 Boys Recurve category Josh’s score of 60/539/23 not only saw him lift the trophy for the u16 Boys but was good enough to make him the overall Junior Gents Champion as well. Well done to everyone and congratulations to the new Champions.

At home eight club members met at Onchan to compete in a Worcester for the Club’s Handicap league. The Worcester is shot on a black and white target and comprises 60 arrows shot in groups of five. The maximum score is 300.

Dave Moore, breaking in a new release aid, suffered an uncharacteristic miss but still finished only seven points short of the maximum. After the handicap was applied Dave had to settle for third place. Tony Hartley equalled his personal best for the round and secured second place after handicapping. Junior archer James Hill added 23 points to his pb which was enough to take the win after the handicap was applied.
