Incredibly close matches in the Indoor League on Monday evening

The Isle of Man Rifle Association Indoor League matches on Monday evening produced some of the closest results so far this season which may prove to be vital ass the league is now in its latter stages. The leaders in league one for most of the season has been Sulby Rifle Club and although a loss this week in all Divisions to their main rivals Port St Mary, the northerners managed to maintain their lead in League one and are in the advantageous position of being a match in hand.

Once again Port St Mary posted a consistent series of scores in Division 1 and the team was led by Derek Kermode and Ashley Gardner both on 99 closely followed by juniors Ashley Gardner and Patrick Kerr on 98. Kevan Kneale claimed the fifth Division 1 position on 97. For the visitors, another junior shooter Fergus Coulter along with senior shooters Peter Webb and Mark Cain all hit 98’s. Julian Teare was a point behind on 97. Although the home team took Division 1 by 4 points, both Divisions 2 and 3 went to the southerners by a single point!

Creevy joins the double 100 competition

Two of the smallest teams on the Island met at The Glen Gardens, Laxey when the visitors were IoMSC Sandsiders. On this occasion, the win went to Laxey by 2 points in Division1 with Harry Creevy posting his second 100 of the 2014/15 season and he becomes the third competitor in the “Double 100” competition which will be shot after the completion of all League fixtures. Creevy was followed by John Wood on 98 and Stephen Curphey on 96. Richard Arthur recorded 98 for the visitors with Will Jones on 97 and junior shooter, Matthew Roosen on 96.

Kirk Michael frighten IoMSC Douglas in Division 1

After some recent terrific results, Kick Michael nearly kicked IoMSC Douglas where it hurts most and just 2 points separated the two Division 1 teams of five at Sinclair on Monday evening. Divisions 2 and 3 went to the home team but I am sure Kirk Michael Rifle Club could easily become a serious threat in the 2015/16 season especially if they can recruit some more members. For the home team Tracey Skelton shot a terrific 99 with two 98’s from Andy Potter and Mike Clague. Tom Lord and Les Crowe both hit 98’s for the visitors with Suzanne McKnight and junior Illiam Christian on 96.

I mentioned in last week’s column that Mike Clague had challenged his score in the IoMSC Sandsiders v IoMSC Douglas match on February 16th. Clague’s challenged card was recently remarked and has resulted in a successful challenge taking his original 99 up to a 100 which not only increases his aggregate season score, but also makes him the fourth shooter who will contest the “Double 100” competition.

Barry Jones has provided the latest NSRA (round 6) postal results, from the (610) Association League and the Island twenty man team failed to impress against a strong Jersey team. Full results were –

Harry Creevy               99

John Brewis                 99

John Wood                  98

Ashley Gardner           98

Kevin Quinn                 98

Mark Cain                   98

Bill Jones                     98

Barry Jones                 97

Richie Arthur               96

Suzanne McKnight      96

Nick Kennish                96

Mike Duncalf              95

Andy Traynor              95

Dave Humphrey          95

Kevan Kneale              94

Steve Callus                 94

Dave Bould                  93

Mike Clague                93

Robin McFee               93

Keith Lowney               90

gave a score of 1915 x 2000 from a score of 1932 from the Jersey team.

Further results were in round 6 of the Women’s League (612) where the 5 lady Isle of Man team were beaten by Bedfordshire Small-bore Association. The individual scores were Jaccie Hamilton-Jones             96

Perryn Callister           94

Shirley Caley               94

Lorrie Thompson         93

Suzanne McKnight      92 = 469 x 500

compared to 484 from the Bedfordshire team. This result has dropped the team a place in the league and they are now in third place on points.

Ben Kelly keeps recent success quiet

It was nice to find a successful result from Ben Kelly on the Isle of Man Shooting Club Facebook page when the Edinburgh Napier University student shot a 390 x 400 to claim a bronze medal in the University Short Range Championship. Ben‘s scores were 99, 98, 97, 96 = 390 (97.5 average), Glasgow student P. Costello recorded 97, 98, 98, 98 = 391 (97.75 ave.) to take silver and the gold medal went to Aberdeen student J. Barron who posted 98, 100, 97, 99 = 394 an average of 98.5. I understand a faulty butt-plate caused considerable problems for the plucky Manx youngster and his series scores appear to confirm that, so maybe there could well have been a different colour medal if all had gone well. Well done Ben, from all on the rock!

Thank you

Barry Jones has asked me to thank all those involved in the County Competitions for completing rounds 8 & 9 early. Without exception the cards were returned to him when requested and all cards are now with the NSRA – thank you ladies and gentlemen, for your help.

Dates for your Diaries

League competitions continue next Monday, March 9th with Port St Mary hosting IoMSC Douglas. IoMSC Sandsiders host Kirk Michael and Sulby travel south to the Stadium, Castletown. The league is now entering its latter stages with just three remaining matches.

Sunday March 8th will see a new competition on the IoMRA calendar, a four card indoor competition and no doubt most will by now be aware, that the Competition Sec has tried to cater for all standards and classes and hopefully, with the support of the local clubs, this will become an annual competition that could equal the Open Championship. To book your firing point time, Mike Clague’s contact information is below.

March 18th is the allocated date for the Golden Jubilee – more information will be available from Mike Clague on claguecpm@hotmail.com  or ring / text on 200713
