Fine for abusive hospital patient

Wed, 29 Jul 2015

A Douglas man who became abusive and aggressive during a visit to Noble's Hospital has been fined £500 for his "appalling" behaviour.

39-year-old Gavin Frankel was taken to the Accident and Emergency department on July 13th for treatment to minor cuts he'd inflicted on himself.

He was drunk and became aggressive towards staff and police - officers had to restrain him when he tried to jump off the bed, fearing he may become violent.

At Douglas Courthouse yesterday Frankel pleaded guilty to a public order offence of using threatening, abusive and insulting words or behaviour.

His advocate told the court he was feeling low and upset and had jumped up to go home adding whilst it was an "unpleasant incident" there was no use of threats or violence.

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes told him the offence was "even less acceptable" because he'd been jailed for the same thing in February.

She also ordered him to pay over £200 in prosecution costs and inflicted a six month licensing ban.
