Around £1,000 has been stolen from a newsagent following a robbery in Douglas.

The attack on Newby’s on Glen Falcon Road happened at around 10.05pm last night – it marks the second incident of this nature in two days.

Police say the lone female employee was locking up and had just turned out the lights when a man burst in and took the cash box from behind the counter.

He then threatened to harm her to try and make her hand over the keys – she refused so he threw a small firework at her before escaping on foot.

The man is described as 5’8” in height and of slim build – he was dressed in dark clothing and had his hood up.

Police want to speak to the driver of a Ford transit van which drove past as the incident was taking place – they are also stepping up patrols Island wide.

Officers say it’s too early to link this to an attempted armed robbery at Strang Stores on Monday – however they say arrests have been made in connection to both offences.
