Suspended sentence for drink driver who moved car 300 metres

Thu, 19 May 2016

A drink driver who was caught after moving his car 300 metres along Douglas Promenade has been banned from the road.

49-year-old Sanjiv Patel was almost three times over the legal limit when he was stopped on March 15th.

He later pleaded guilty to the offence - at Douglas Courthouse this week the Onchan man's actions were described by his advocate as a "very foolish, spur of the moment act".

She told the court Patel had suffered difficult personal circumstances in the months leading to the offence and "foolishly he'd turned to alcohol as a crutch".

Sentencing him Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes said he didn't appear to have learnt from his three previous convictions for the same offence.

She sentenced him to three months in custody which was suspended for two years and placed him under a two year supervision order.

In addition Patel was disqualified from driving for five years, fined £750 and ordered to pay court costs of £125.
