No disc zone review for Christmas shoppers

The Infrastructure Minister believes there's no need to make changes to disc zone parking in the Island's towns in the run up to Christmas.

Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper called for Ray Harmer's Department to review on-street parking restrictions ahead of the busiest shopping period of the year to encourage shoppers to use local retailers.

However, Mr Harmer says the current time limits strike the right balance, ensuring short-term spaces aren't blocked by those wanting to stay in town longer.

The Minister added that long-term parking is available around the Island, and that retail benefits most when there are both options.

Although there are no plans for an Island-wide review, Mr Harmer admitted he would be open to hearing from local representatives and the Chamber of Trade if there are specific issues in an area.

Disc zones allow motorists to park for free for a period usually between 15 minutes and 2 hours depending on the location.
