A member of the Department of Economic Development says the Island's passion for cycling helped secure this year's British national road championships.

British Cycling confirmed earlier that it will crown the 2017 road race and time trial champions on the Isle of Man in June.

Manx cyclists Peter Kennaugh and Mark Cavendish have both worn the British champion's jersey in previous years, while a number of other local riders could be involved.

In an interview with MTTV, MHK Rob Callister insists that the Manx public's interest in the sport was crucial in securing the event [play audio].
