Tynwald agrees to keep full-length horse tramway

Wed, 18 Jan 2017

The horse trams will continue to operate the full length of Douglas promenade once the road undergoes reconstruction.

Tynwald voted to approve plans to keep the double tracks in place between Summerland and Broadway.

However, an amendment from Douglas East MHK Chris Robertshaw to have a single track added between the War Memorial and Sea Terminal was also supported, with 17 votes for and 14 against.

The Island's parliament approved plans to reconstruct Douglas promenade last month, but the two branches were unable to agree over the future of the tramway, resulting in Infrastructure Minister Ray Harmer asking for the combined vote at this month's sitting.

Work is expected to get underway on Douglas prom later this year.
