DEFA warns of risks of adopting animals from off-Island

Tue, 14 Feb 2017

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture is urging anyone looking to adopt a dog online to think of the risks involved.

The warning comes after a local resident adopted a dog from a rescue centre in Southern England which turned out to be an illegal pit bull type terrier.

DEFA had to seize the animal and are having him deported back to the UK.

Those interested in adopting an animal from an off-Island source are urged to fully assess the animal and be aware of any situations that could arise later.

The Department also recommends assessing the mother and the litter as a whole when adopting a puppy and to be extra vigilant when taking in dogs from abroad.
