Almost 2,800 workers are employed on zero hours contract with the Isle of Man Government.

Minister of Policy and Reform Chris Thomas confirmed nearly 1,600 are employed exclusively on zero hours contracts, while almost 1,200 permanent employees have additional zero hours deals with the Government.

The Department of Education and Children and Department of Health and Social Care each have more than 1,000 workers on zero hours contracts.

Mr Thomas says such contracts give the Government operational advantages, allowing it to find cover at short notice and take on casual workers.

Some of the roles covered by zero hours contracts include supply teachers, exam invigilators and relief social workers.
