Tynwald members raise Government funding, pension pot concerns

Thu, 23 Feb 2017

Funding of Government services, public sector pensions and the cost of Brexit are all future concerns for the Island - that's according to some Tynwald members who criticised parts of the Island's budget for the 2017-18 financial year.

Douglas East MHK Chris Robertshaw was among those to express concern at the Treaury Minister's plans for Government funding over the next five years, dismissing Alfred Cannan's projections as a forecast.

Meanwhile, Ramsey MHK Lawrie Hooper described the public sector pension liability as a key threat to the stability of the Island's finances.

Garff member Daphne Caine believes the new £1m fund established to help the Island during Brexit negotiations could be inadequate.

Despite the issues raised, Mr Cannan's first budget received unanimous support from Tynwald.
