The Island's planning and building authority says an alarming number of wood-burning stoves are installed incorrectly on the Isle of Man.

Anyone fitting such an appliance in their home must have permission from the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, and the stove must meet minimum installation standards.

However, the Department warns an increasing number of people are by-passing the requirements.

DEFA Minister Geoffrey Boot says faulty appliances can pose a fire risk, as well as endangering lives.

Last week the Island's fire service also issued a reminder about safely installing wood-burning stoves after being called to an incident involving a wood burner.
