Manx cyclist Mark Cavendish is facing a spell on the sidelines after being diagnosed with infectious mononucleosis caused by the Epstein-Barr virus.

Team Dimension Data say the 30-year-old needs rest as there is no specific treatment for the condition before making a gradual return to action.

Infectious mononucleosis is commonly known as glandular fever or mono and leaves those suffering from the illness fatigued and with a fever.

It's not know how long the Manx Missile will be out of action, but his team hope his symptoms will improve over the next two weeks, with his main focus for the season still the Tour de France.

Cavendish hasn't raced since competing in the Milan-San Remo on March 18th.
