Creevy enjoys great outdoors with stunning show at St John's

Fri, 28 Apr 2017

Harry Creevy kept his cool as the outdoor season got underway with a vengeance and he won the first round of the 50m Osborne Carpets event at the Sinclair Range.

His total of 599.0 pulled him clear of Tracey Skelton in second with 597.5 and Gemma Kermode in third on 595.3. One of the major talking points on the opening night of 50m outdoor shooting was the distinctly un-Spring like temperatures.

Creevy, a Commonwealth Games veteran and hugely experienced international shooter, revealed: ''From memory I don't I think I've ever shot in such cold conditions. That north wind was a chiller!'

And he wasn't the only one to make mention of it, too.

Winner of B class in the Osborne with 596.0, Sharon Drysdale, commented after the match: 'I can honestly say tonight's shooting was torture! First match of the "summer" league felt more like winter. So windy and cold I couldn't see the target for my chittering - surprised by the performance considering.

'Now does anyone have a blowtorch so I can thaw?'

'I've just about thawed out from the first outdoor shooting competition,' said Sue Keown, who came 4th in the Tynwald  Shield handicap.

It is a backhanded compliment to the success of the Sinclair range that a veritable crowd descended on the venue for the first events. All 20 Sius electronic targets were spoken for by start of play on match night, leaving some shooters unable to take part until later. It is hoped the opening times will be changed to alleviate this.

Michael Duncalf admitted the event was a victim of its own popularity.

'It was great to see all twenty firing points taken up but as a result it was also sad to see some members turned away.

'So as mentioned by Brian [Fozzard] there will be an earlier start with call to the line at 5pm.'

And Duncalf, who achieved a Commonwealth Games consideration score at the recent Easter Shoot, added: 'For those of you that can it would be great if you could make this detail to ease congestion in the second detail.'

And don't forget, the IOMRA's annual dinner and prizegiving will be on 6 May. This year will be a change of format with the event being held at the Sinclair range in the form of a barbecue. Anyone interested should contact Michael Duncalf for tickets, £10 adult £5 junior (under 18)
