New fishing restrictions to protect whelks

Wed, 02 Aug 2017

The Island's fishing authority is extending the protection for whelks.

Whelks are currently protected from the shore to three miles out, but the new restrictions will protect whelks up to 12 miles out.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture will require those fishing for the species to have a licence from August 17th.

Licences will be available to those who can prove they fished for whelks in the Island's seas last year, while there will also be restrictions on the number of pots that can be used to catch whelks.

It's hoped the changes will make the whelk fishery sustainable.
