Mon, 04 Sep 2017

Over 1,300 safety incidents have been reported on the Island's railways since October 2011.

The Department of Infrastructure revealed a total of 1,351 incidents, near misses and hazard reports have been registered including barrier issues, trackside fires and livestock problems.

Almost half of the incidents occurred on the steam railway, with 276 incidents involving barriers.

More than 200 overhead equipment issues affected the Manx Electric Railway, while almost 150 road traffic and crossing incidents were reported on the MER.

Just two incidents have been reported involving the horse trams, but the DoI didn't start recording information before taking over the service in April 2016.

A total of 89 incidents resulted in staff injury, while vandalism affected the railways on 17 occasions.
