Nurseries take part in toothbrushing project

Mon, 11 Sep 2017

Children attending six of the Island's nurseries are taking part in a pilot toothbrushing project in a bid to reduce tooth decay.

Each kid will be supplied with a toothbrush which will be kept at the nursery for the duration of the three-month trial, and will be supervised while brushing their teeth every day.

The Department of Health and Social Care hopes the project will be brought in across the Island next year if the pilot is successful.

The project is based on Scotland's Childsmile programme, which is estimated to save the NHS there around £5m a year in dental treatment.

It's estimated around a quarter of five year olds on the Island are suffering from tooth decay.
