Less meat being processed on Island

Wed, 25 Oct 2017

The amount of livestock being processed at the Isle of Man Meat Plant has fallen over the last five years.

Last year, just over 40,000 cattle and sheep were processed by Isle of Man Meats, while nearly 25,000 animals were exported.

In 2012, the Meat Plant processed around 47,000 livestock, and just over 18,000 were taken off Island.

In 2016 there was a big jump in the number of sheep being exported, up from 8,062 in 2015 to 20,304 last year.

At the end of August this year, more cattle had been exported than had been processed at the Meat Plant.

The Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture recently invited tenders from private companies to operate the Meat Plant.
