Temporary king scallop limit enforced

The Island's fishing authorities are bringing in a temporary catch limit for king scallops.

The move comes after talks between the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture and the fishing industry following concerns that unsustainable levels of scallops have been landed recently.

From today, vessels licenced to fish in Manx waters will only be able to catch 1400kg per day.

In the first eight days of the king scallop fishing season almost 800 tonnes were landed - with some vessels catching more than 8000kg per day.

The limit will be in place for six weeks.
