High debt levels on the Island claims report

People on the Isle of Man have some of the biggest debts in the British Isles according to a UK report.

Debt management firm Clear Debt claims the average amount of money owed is just over £36,500.

It says only people in London, Wiltshire and Salisbury owe more.

Pauline Wood is from the Office of Fair Trading's Debt Counselling Service.

Although she doesn't claim the study is wrong, she says the figure given differs to their own.

" Our average is about £25,000.  That's the people who come to our office and ask for help, It's not the Island as a whole.  So there may be people who do have larger debts, but they're managing them on their salaries and they're not causing them any problems."
