Day One: Team Isle of Man Round-Up

Team Isle of Man started off this year's Commonwealth Games in Birmingham with strong performances.

Swimming got the proceedings underway for the team on Day One of the Games.

A packed out Sandwell Aquatics Centre saw Laura Kinley qualify for the Women's 50m Breaststroke semi-finals. The 25-year-old later finished in sixth place with a time of 32.47secs on Friday evening.

Laura said: "It's an incredible experience to compete against some of the best people in the world. I've been really overwhelmed with all the support back home and here. I hope I've done everyone proud." 

"I've still got another couple of races in the week so I will be working towards those."

Laura is next scheduled to compete in the Women's 100m Breaststroke heats on Monday.

There were also proud moments for the swimming team with 17-year-old Kiera Prentice setting herself a new personal best of 2min 14.61 secs in the Women's 200m Freestyle heats. 

The Isle of Man's Mixed Relay Team also set a new Island record in the 4x 100m Freestyle Relay.

In the Triathlon, Niall Caley and Will Draper were in action at Sutton Park as they took on the Men's Individual Sprint.

Niall Caley came 20th in a field of 48 in his first Commonwealth Games.

Meanwhile, 21-year-old Will Draper came 24th.

In Boxing, Jamie Devine lost his match in the Men's Over 60kg-63.5kg Light Welterweight at the National Exhibition Centre.

It followed a split decision in his bout with Ghana's Abdul Wahbib Omar.

In a tweet, Isle of Man CGA said: "He gave it his absolute all and was incredible out there."
