About the Games

Team Isle of Man are heading to the UK, as the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games get underway on 28th July.

The Commonwealth Games involves countries that make up the Commonwealth, but in recent time the Games have allowed any nation that wishes to take part.

This year’s Games will see 72 countries complete under their own flags including the Isle of Man.

The first Commonwealth Games took place in 1930 in Canada, although it was originally called the British Empire Games.

Birmingham will host the greatest number of events in the Games history. Host nations are able to add or exclude events in each Games.

Women’s Cricket has been introduced for the first time and will be played at the famous Edgbaston Stadium.

Events at the 2022 Games include:

  • Athletics and Para Athletics

  • Badminton

  • Basketball

  • Beach Volleyball

  • Boxing

  • Cricket T20

  • Cycling

  • Gymnastics

  • Hockey

  • Judo

  • Lawn Bowls and Para Lawn Bowls

  • Netball

  • Para Powerlifting

  • Rugby Sevens

  • Squash

  • Table Tennis and Para Table Tennis

  • Triathlon and Para Triathlon

  • Wheelchair Basketball

  • Weightlifting

  • Wrestling

The opening ceremony will take place on Thursday 28th July at the Alexander Stadium with the pre- show starting at 7:15pm.

Organisers have confirmed Duran Duran, Birmingham Royal Ballet and guitarist Tony Iommi will be able on the acts to perform on the opening night.

Don’t forget to cheer on Team Isle of Man who will enter the stadium which will be beamed to an audience of more than 1.5 billion people around the globe.

The closing ceremony will take place on Monday 8th August when the Games will handed over to Victoria in Australia.
