Politician accuses government of 'mugging rate payers'

Wed, 09 Mar 2011

An MHK is accusing the government of mugging Douglas ratepayers.

Bill Malarkey's accusation is connected with the saga over the former bus station site in Lord Street.

Developer Askett Hawk was given the go ahead to build a hotel on the government-owned land several years ago, but no work has been done.

Douglas corporation have run a car park at the site for a number of years and shared half the money it makes with the DoI.

Now the DoI has announced it's stopping that arrangement.

Mr Malarkey isn't convinced the hotel development will take place and is annoyed that the corporation could lose around £122,000 pounds per year. (Play audio file below)
