Euthanasia debate in the spotlight

Thu, 31 Mar 2011

The sensitive issue of 'assisted dying' or euthanasia is back in the spotlight again.

The chance to revisit the debate is being welcomed by people on both sides of the argument.

With the general election approaching, Pro-life campaign group 'LIFE Isle of Man' has arranged for expert Dr John Ling to visit the Island to give talks to the public, politicians and members of the clergy.

At least two election candidates support the idea of assisted dying.

The issue was visited by the government in 2003 but no changes to currents laws came about following an investigation by a Tynwald Select Committee.

Campaign group LIFE believes in good palliative care for the terminally ill and says it upholds the value of all human life.

On the other side of the coin, local members of 'Dignity in Dying' believe people should be allowed to choose.

Group member Hilary Paul thinks anyone with views should ask their election candidates where they stand on the issue.[Play audio file below]

Dr Ling will speak to the public on Saturday 2nd April at St Johns Mill from 2pm - 4pm and at the Java Lounge in Douglas from 7.30pm - 9.00pm.
