New legal high could be banned soon

Fri, 27 May 2011

Officials are trying to decide if a legal high which led to the death of teenager should be banned.

17 year old Tanya Hughes from Ramsey died last month after taking MDAI.

MHK Bill Malarkey is head of the government's Drug and Alcohol Strategy.

He says when they became aware of the death, they called the Advisory Council on the Misuse of Drugs.

A meeting will be held next week to determine if the drug needs to be outlawed.

Mr Malarkey says if it does it could go to Tynwald for approval in June or July.

He says they've acted quickly on this, but a lot has to be known about a substance before it can be banned.[Play audio file below]
