A chance to understand mental health

Mon, 08 Oct 2012

Today marks the start of World Mental Health Awareness week.

It’s a UK wide initiative geared toward raising awareness to the different conditions that can affect a large number of people and impact their daily lives.

Most common of the mental health issues, depression will form the focal point of the week.

It’s an issue affecting a large number of people on the Island, a recent survey revealed 35% care for or are a relative of someone who has or had a mental health problem and 44% have a friend who has or had a mental health problem.

Specialist for the mental health service Julie Bennion says many conditions are struggling to be socially accepted
