Gambling addict jailed for 70 weeks

Thu, 17 Sep 2015

A Peel man whose gambling addiction has "cost him everything" has been jailed for 70 weeks.

44-year-old Kevin Quirk was sent to prison after admitting going equipped to steal, attempted theft and taking a car without consent on August 26th.

Police arrested Quirk after he was spotted trying doors of vehicles in Baldrine.

He also admitted driving whilst disqualified, without due care and attention and having no insurance.

His advocate told the court it was the act of a "desperate man" and he couldn't believe he'd been found "rummaging around in cars in the middle of the night".

He said Quirk's longstanding addiction meant he "borrowed, begged and ultimately stole".

Sentencing him to 50 weeks Deputy High Bailiff Jayne Hughes also activated 20 weeks of a previous suspended sentence which had been breached.

Sending Quirk to prison she said she hoped he would take the time to "reflect" on his offending.
