Education chiefs question validity of union report

Thu, 30 Mar 2017

The Department of Education and Children says it has serious concerns over the validity of a union report into pupils' behaviour on the Isle of Man.

A survey of teachers on the Island carried out by the NASUWT claims over 80% of teachers have been verbally abused or threatened with violence outside school hours.

The DEC admits the findings present an extremely poor view of the Island's children and young people, but is raising concerns over the methods used to generate the data.

The Department believes the union only questioned a small proportion of the Island's 900 teachers, as many Manx teachers are represented by other unions.

It also insists all poor or aggressive behaviour towards teachers is taken very seriously.
