Cricket - St John's set for Victory?

Thu, 25 Aug 2011

After a day of shocks, St John's are poised to win the Standard Bank Premiership. The Saints need to take only one point from their final game next Sunday to win the trophy.

The big surprise of the afternoon was the defeat of second placed Ramsey at home to Valkyres who were in bottom position. In a spirited display the southern club recorded only their second win of the season to silence the northern fans.

Batting first, Valkyres ran up an imposing total of 210 and then dismissed the northern club for 161. Their star was Ryan Windell who hit 41 and took three wickets.

Meanwhile St John's overcame Cronkbourne at Tromode with a powerful all-round display. They amassed 212 for 9 from their fifty overs - skipper Greg Hawke knocked 61. The Douglas batsmen had no answer to the Saint's attack and were dismissed for 84. Hawke took 4 for 15 and Akkie van den Berg claimed 3 -16.

There was a dramatic finish to the match between Castletown and Crosby. The Town batsmen made 240 - Gareth Morris hammered 69. In reply the Marown side reached 158 with their last pair at the crease. In tense conditions, Ross Berry and Dave Picken survived the final two overs to gain a draw.
