Michael’s first match of the season got off to a close encounter against Selborne. The match started with Michael's second womens Sarah Gardner and Jo Moore winning in two straight games against Susie Stewart and Julie McLean. Second mens saw Selborne level the match with Alan Ferguson and Roy Wilson beating brothers Ryan and Michael Brew in two. First mens saw the only match that went to three on the night with Michael pairing Ben Kneale and David Gardner  winning the first before Selborne’s Stuart Foley and Alex Lambie came back to win the next two. First womens saw a back in form Leanne Miller and Vanessa Christian beat Selborne’s Lisa Lewin and Sarah Davidson in two leaving the match 5-4 to Michael at the halfway mark. The mixed followed a similar pattern with fourth going to Seborne in two, third to Michael in two, second to Selborne in two and the final match of the night going to Michael in two.   BK

 League 3

Doehle Corporate Selborne B 10 Microgaming Marown B 9

At the conclusion of this enthralling match, all agreed  it was one of the closest and fairly fought matches seen in living memory. So many games could easily have gone either way. Ten games were only decided by two points with Marown taking seven of those games. Second mens set the tone, asSelborne's  Neil McMullen and Paul Griffiths lost 19/21 19/21 to Joe Garrity and Matthew Colley. However Selborne's Sue Young and Angela Guest took second womens 21/11 21/16 against Abbey Turton and Michelle Garrity. At first mens Selborne's Ben Watterson and Alan Ferguson edged Darren Richards and Paddy Garrity 21/15 19/21 21/19, while Gill Young and Anita Griffiths extended Selborne's lead to 6-3 with a 21/12 21/8 over Sharon Kelly and Isla Thomas at first womens. At fourth mixed a slow start cost Selborne's McMullen and Sue Young  losing 19/21 21/10 15/21 to Colley and Michelle Garrity. Paul Griffiths and Guest 'somehow!' lost 21/14 20/22 15/21 at third to Marown's Joe Garrity and Turton, so when Selborne's Watterson and Gill Young were narrowly beaten 22/24 19/21 by Paddy Garrity and Thomas, Marown were 9-8 up! Two more hard-fought games, and a 'Captain's performance' from Ferguson in particular with Anita Griffiths saw the home team get their just about deserved victory when they beat Richards and Kelly 27/25 22/20. This was Michael B team's first match of the season which ended with a convincing win.  The match started with Michael's second men's Alan Brew (captain) and Jamie Everitt winning in two straight games against James Strickett and Paul Withington, Second womens Jess Corlett and Ali Collister of Michael also won in two straight games against Natalie Bennett and Katerina Clarke. Michael's first women Jo Moore and Steph Gardner won in style beating Sarah Clarke and Elly Livesy  21/7 21/9. Onto first mens now and Lewis Cassidy and Richard Done took on Sulby's Norman Brew and Adam Peel. Again Michael dominated the games 21/13 21/11, which was a very good performance against a strong pair.

Michael's fourth mixed pairing of  Brew and Collister comfortably beat Sulby's Withington and Clarke. The tables turned in the third mixed encounter with Michael's Jamie Everitt and Steph Gardner losing to Sulby's Strickett and Bennett in two straight games. Done and Moore didn't hang around at second mixed beating Sulby's  Peel and  Livesy 21/14 in the frst then a very close 23/21 to take the second game. The last mixed doubles of the night saw Corlett and  Cassidy take on Sulby's Brew and Clarke.  A good fight to the end with the only match of the evening going the full distance, Michael started by winning in the first game 21/19 and losing the second 14/21 but turning it on in the third winning 21/5.  A fantastic night all round. AB

Experience just about had the measure of youth in this good contest, as 'evergreen octegenarian!' Vera Thomas, backed up by team-mates, played steadily during Selborne's success! Tynwald Celts won four of first six games, three of those 21/20!, only for Selborne to win the last six games to clinch all three league points. First up, Jane Casey and Renee Michalogiannis shared games with Kira Birchall and Janine Coleman 21/14 20/21, while Fe Gawne and Thomas had two long battling 20/21 losses to Heather Clague and young Beth Lewis. Casey and Thomas then shared games 21/16  15/21 against Clague and Lewis, before Gawne and Michalogiannis did well beating Clague and Coleman 21/16  21/14 to set Selborne on the way to overall victory. Close final game saw Gawne and Casey 21/18 win over mother and daughter Clague and Birchall - should be a good return match.  RMcM
