The IoMAC Championships took place at Onchan on Sunday and produced some close fought contests. The adults shot a WA18 Triple Face Round in the morning session, while the Juniors shot a Single Face Portsmouth round in the afternoon. Shooting positions were allocated by the drawing of lots.

The Gents Compound division produced a nail biting competition between father and son Dave and Rhys Moore. Dave had a one point advantage after the first dozen arrows but Rhys squared things by the end of the second dozen. Dave then went 1 point up again at the end of the third, which increased to a 2 point lead going into the last dozen. Rhys then out-shot his father with his last twelve arrows but it was not quite enough and Dave Moore claimed victory by a single point. Pete Mumford shot consistently but dropped into the 8 ring too many times to mount a serious challenge and had to be content with third place. Dave Daugherty shooting in the Compound Championships for the first time was delighted to add 21 points to his pb for the round and take fourth place. Colin Moore who had switched to Barebow for most of the season was out of practice with his Compound and although he put in consistent ends he had to settle for fifth this time around.

The Gents Recurve discipline provided the largest field of the day with six archers vying for the honours. It soon became clear that the field was split into two, with Tony Hartley, Danny Cowin and reigning champion Josh Trafford in the running for the Trophy, while Dave Berry, Matthew Elliott and newcomer David Smith were fighting it out for the minor places.

Josh Trafford had a nightmare start recording a miss with one of his first six arrows. Danny Cowin’s shooting was a little erratic but he kept his first dozen arrows on target. Tony Hartley had a flying start opening up a 9 point lead over second place Cowin. Josh then found a bit of form leap-frogging Danny and closing to within 6 points of Tony. By the end of the third dozen Tony still had a 5 point lead but an improving Danny Cowin had drawn level with Josh. Danny then found a blinding bit of form as Josh went off the boil again and going into the final dozen arrows Danny had a 3 point lead over Tony, while Josh had dropped back to third. Josh then recorded his best end total for the day which put him ahead of Tony on Gold diffence but it was too little too late, as Danny Cowin came home 5 points clear to lift the 2017 Trophy. Dave Berry finished fourth and Matthew Elliott fifth. David Smith, who has only recently taken up archery, had to settle for sixth place but did win the Senior Novice Trophy which is decided by handicap.

Unfortunately both the Ladies Recurve and Compound divisions only had a field of one, so both Barbara Harris and Joy Gough took their respective titles by default.

In the afternoon the Juniors made their bid for the silverware. As the only girl competing Tilly Ashton took the Junior Ladies Trophy. Joseph Reaney, Toby Young, Aaron Pannell-Cottier, Jacob Brookes and Nathan Kinrade lined up in the Junior Gents category. It was a close run thing between Joseph Reaney and Toby Young but in the end Toby ran out the winner by 4 points. Little Jacob Brookes out-shot Aaron Pannell-Cottier to finish third overall and take the u13’s Trophy as well. Nathan Kinrade who was shooting in his first Indoor championship finished fifth but picked up the Junior Novice Trophy for his efforts.
