Golf championships reach semi finals

Thu, 24 Jun 2010

The semi finals of this year's Isle of Man Close Amateur Championship take place this afternoon.

The quarter finals of this year's competition were played in quite windy conditions last night, which did make shot selection a challenge at times.

In the first match, a combination of unlucky breaks for Chris Kneen and a putter that was working extremely well for Daryl Callister, resulted in a 5&4 match win for Callister.

Kevin Moore completes the first match pairing for this evening as he beat Daniel Arneil 6&4.

Moore won 6 holes on the trot which helped secure the match.

Davy Jones was next to book his place in the semi finals by beating 8 times champion Gary Wilson, who put up a superb fight against Jones.

Wilson got off to a 3 hole lead after 3 holes, but Jones managed to peg the match back to all square by the 7th.

The match remained pretty even from there, but crucial wins on 16 and a birdie on 17 sealed the win.

Jones will play defending champion Paul Lowey in the second match today as Lowey dispatched Paul McMullan out of the competition.

This match remained very close through out, but the holes started to slip away for McMullan on the back nine. The match finished 4&2.
