The Chief Minister says the current situation facing the Steam Packet Company is unfortunate, but that is how the free market works.

Tony Brown told Tynwald that the user agreement between the Government and the Steam Packet only gives the ferry operator exlcusive access to the links span, not all freight and passenger services.

A working group of three Ministers has been set up to monitor the situation between the Steam Packet Company and rival firm Mezeron, who recently started a freight service from Douglas.

Mr Brown says there's no need for the Government to intervene at this time [play clip]
