Public wants promenades to look better

The Manx public wants to see more spent on Douglas promenades to improve their appearance, the horse trams relocated and the cycleway to remain in place.

The Department of Infrastructure has revealed the findings of its public consultation into the future of the promenades.

Tynwald has bugetted £10million for works on the promenades over the next four years.

85% of the 452 people who responded don't want to see a bus lane brought in, whilst 64% don't want a new sea wall.

Nearly two thirds of those who replied want the horse tram tracks to be moved to one side, with the majority prefering a single track to be installed.

The DoI says relocating the track would improve safety and reduce congestion, and is looking into the opportunity to share tracks with the Manx Electric Railway.

66% would accept higher spending to make the area look better.

The majority want the width of the road, the number of crossings, the number and size of taxi ranks, the amount of coach parking and the size of the gardens to remain the same.

70% want to see the same amount of parking spaces, if not more.
